ARABIC CALLIGRAPHY PAINTINGS
My journey into the realm of unknown begins with the line as it is the ray of light for me. I am celebrating energy and movement of line in my paintings, drawings and sculptures. I have always followed inner rhythm and by listening to it I draw with continuous line sometimes forming figural compositions with connected figures and other times abstract formations. Since my exposure to Arabic Calligraphy during my stay in Middle East, I feel my line has become more lyrical and melodious.
I find myself yearning to find infinite possibilities of the lyrical line itself on large canvases. I just want to plunge myself into the pleasure of contemplating the abstract flow of the swelling lines, and form compositions of lines and fields within given space and enjoy the celebration of calligraphy through lyrical visions.
I use the same stroke of the brush for Arabic letters as I do for suggesting human forms. Both are fluid as if temporary expressions of the eternal universal vibration and energy. There is a vague suggestion of hide-and-seek, where figures and space bond to show volume and deny it all at the same time. It is the line that performs both as a mark and as contour that charges space. These paintings are visually flowing, undulating spiral through space in hushed and deep tones connecting figures and ground in a spiritual union, a synthesis of contour, color and space.
My work is created through an ongoing process of introspection that involves action and reaction to a variety of materials. My method is physical and meditative in a process that fills each canvas with moving lines and multi-layered textures. For me creating art means getting physically involved with the piece; scratching, sanding, and layering, adding details in pen and ink or materials like paper, rope, modeling paste, paper Mache or copper plate can all be used to create relief paintings that incorporate my cultural viewpoint to interpret contemporary political, social and spiritual issues.

You Are Joy
You are like water and we are like millstones
You are like wind & we are like dust
The wind is hidden, the dust is plainly seen
You are the invisible spring & we are your lush garden.

Man Ou Tu (I and You)
Your love lifts my soul from the body to the sky
And you lift me up out of the two worlds
I want your sun to teach my raindrops
So your heat can raise my soul upward like a cloud
Your love lifts my soul from the body to the sky
And you lift me up out of the two worlds
I want your sun to teach my raindrops
So your heat can raise my soul upward like a cloud
| Our Heros-Nirbhaya Jyoti | |
In today’s global world we are connected with all tragedies and joys of the world. Recent violence against women and younger generation has affected me deeply and I am trying to give it a positive turn for the peace of my own mind and peace of the world.
Nirbhaya Jyoti, victim of the gang rape in Delhi, India, kept crying “Ma, clean my body, give me bath” and she was bathed in the light of God and purified. Let us not forget her….

MULTI MEDIA, MULTI CULTURAL SPIRITUAL ARTIST
I have been a spiritual person from beginning. I grew up reading Bhagwath Geeta and Upnisheds with my mother who also guided me to the eternal love of God. Later I accepted Islam through my marriage as my husband was a Muslim but the eternal love of God remained unchanged. Rituals changed.
As painting and drawing has been my vehicle to learn about my purpose in life, I continued. After acquiring Masters degree in Fine Arts, I was still wondering as how to describe my spirituality or my gratitude towards God for that eternal love as everything was very abstract in my mind. So I started with large abstract landscapes depicting the power and Majesty of the Creator through movements in the nature.
Later as a married women I mingled with many people, moved from India to Iran and Kuwait, became mother of two beautiful children, dealt with a very large family on a day today basis, wove the fabric of relationships, and I was amazed by the diversity of human beings in form, color and behaviors.
I remained influenced by human form and humanity. I started creating connected figures with continuous lyrical line as symbolically bringing them together. My spirituality found a visual language. I wanted to spread hope and peace through my celebration of life series and the flow of humanity series.
And I rediscovered Rumi with his universal language of love. These poems echoed my thoughts and I have done several paintings inspired by the Rumi poems to erase the differences and bring communities together to one God and help them find the eternal that has opened my heart and healed my soul.

Salma Arastu - Indian Muslim Artist | Arabic Calligraphy | spiritual mixed media paintings | sculptures
Painting has been my need ever since I can remember and it has become the vehicle to find my purpose of life.
Over the past more than thirty years I have created images with continuous, lyrical line and a variety of re-purposed materials in an effort to express joy in the universal spirit that unites humanity. Through my art I have been able to transcend all physical and mental limitations to create images of transformation. As a woman, Hindu, Muslim, artist and mother, I see this challenge as a unique opportunity to create harmony through the expression of the universal in my art.
My travels from India to Iran, Kuwait, Germany, Pennsylvania and my recent migration to San Francisco combined with experiences in communities worldwide have left a conceptual impact on my work. Folk art, miniature art, and Arabic Calligraphy are three strong artistic influences that I have adopted along my journeys. I find that multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, multi-cultural images best describe my vision of the modern world.
In my efforts, I have tried to bring Eastern spirituality, and western techniques of painting learned over the years. Through the contrasting elements in my work, I yearn and search for unity and when that unity or balance is achieved, it brings about a tranquility and joy.
Presently I am working on three series simultaneously that discuss and interpret my search for universal love in three different mediums-mixed media paintings, large Acrylic paintings on canvas and metal sculptures.
